The OP brings up an interesting point.

Big John down at the auto factory who put in his 25 and takes 5 weeks off each year is different than the host of a television or radio show. GM can put someone else on the John's spot of the line without much of a hitch.

A fill in host on radio or TV messes with the sound and usually means radios and TV's are turned off.

There is an expectation there that isn't there for Big John or a similar real world job.
