there is a group of progressives in Madison that will go to great lengths to "save" a station that is owned by one of the worst corporations in the world and couldn't be more antithetical to their political persuasion.

bill clinton really fucked us over (broadcasters) by going along with the telecommunication act of 1996. this allowed clear channel to buy thousands of radio stations and systemically purge the airwaves of local talent. there is now a few big players in the larger markets that feed an entire region. instead of having thousands of locally controlled station, we now have only a handful.

in the process, clear channel has driven down ad rates (not hard when you have a 7 stations staffed by a few people) which then make it impossible for other radio groups to hire local DJs, talk hosts, and a local news team.

this is not only bad for any poor soul that WANTS to work in radio but it also homogenizes culture, eliminates local news, and destroys a medium that was once a vital part of broader society.

You might like listening to Ed Schultz and Bill Press but tuning in to a clear channel station is directly supporting the type of corporate greed that Schultz and Miller talk about daily.

if you think I'm overly critical, ask someone who works at clear channel and you'll hear first hand how an absolutely disgusting corporation operates.
